Mount Psiloritis is a mystical place situated in the center of Crete. It is a symbol, the symbol of Crete, the symbol of manliness and freedom. Psiloritis is not only an area of natural beauty but also of historical and cultural value.
The mountain is considered as the birthplace of the king of Gods Zeus, as according to the mythology his mother took him there as an infant to hide him in a cave until he became a man only to rescue him from the wrath of his father Kronos.
Today, the visitor is still fascinated by its beauty. Here, the traditions and skills of shepherds and cheese-makers, manifested in the characteristic “mitata”, have been preserved since Minoan times. A rich tradition of folklore and culture flourishes in the beautiful villages, which surround the mountain, through which the genuine and unaltered art, the wisdom and the civilization of the earlier inhabitants of Crete are continued.
The jeep tour starts at 09:00 from Gazi.Driving towards the foothill of the Mountain and to the gorges of Thylisos. The first stop pause is in the small village of Korfes where we visit a traditional church. We continue our drive to one of the highest points of Crete, Kroussonas, from where we have the beautiful view of the capital Heraklion.
We have the opportunity to pass some small dairies where famous Greek cheese, Kefalotiri, is handmade.
As we drive up the mountains, we are increasingly surrounded by rocks but as we get closer to the top of Psiloritis, the highest mountain of Crete with 2.456m, we are ready to prepare our barbeque lunch at 1.500m altitude in the middle of a wooded plateau, near old chapel. After our barbeque we begin our descent trough the village of Anogeia which is famous for its heroic resistance during the II World War. We continue and drive until Zoniana Village where we visit the cave Sfendoni.
